The Full Story
Arabella King is a Sydney-based emerging game and film composer, who has just completed her Bachelor of Music (Composition for Creative Industries) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Arabella is a multi-instrumentalist, having been eager to immerse herself in as much music as possible from a young age. Her composition journey began in high school under the incredible guidance of acclaimed composer Natalie Nicolas, and since then, her skillset has insurmountably grown. Her music is richly colourful, emotionally evocative, and magically enchanting.
"A fascination for the fantastical, an emphasis on the emotional"
Throughout her life, Arabella was never able to “grow up” and stop watching animated movies and shows, and as a result, she has carried that sense of wonder and magic from these mediums into her array of compositions. With her nose stuck in a book and her eyes glued to the screen, she explored fantasy and sci-fi genres, falling in love with anything “not-real”. Arabella is incredibly excited by recent animated works such as Arcane and Into The Spiderverse, as well as the work of Australian animation company 'Glitch', which have been reshaping the film industry, and helping people realise the potential and art of animation.
In the later half of her degree she was introduced to the world of video game music and has since been awed and inspired by the beautiful blend of art, fantasy and interactive game-play. She has now made several games through Twine and Unity to bring her musical ideas to life, from Sirens and Pirates to a submarine Apocalyptic Survival game. Arabella's music is influenced by the games she plays, from the cozy farm tunes of "Stardew Valley", the musically responsive gameplay of "Untitled Goose Game" and "Mini Metro", to the beautiful orchestration of "Spiritfarer" and "Hollow Knight". Most recently, she has created original music and SFX for the game 'Ooble Gardens' for Nova Games, which has been released on Steam.
She has gained an abundance of experience collaborating with other creatives. In 2021-2022 she was selected as the composer in residence for the Macquarie University Symphonic Orchestra, who commissioned her to write ‘Even Angels Fall’, a piece that highlights her imaginative writing and fantastical fascination. She has scored for an RMIT student's animated short films, and contributed sound effects and original music for local Game Jams and small Game Dev Teams. She has written a cinematic pop album as part of 'The Strangers Orchestra' during her degree, and has worked with the Syndey Youth Orchestra to arrange the pop song "The Girl Who Lived Here" by Shalani Thomas for orchestra. Influenced by the rich colours and incredible storytelling of composers such as John Powell, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, she cannot wait to bring others' visions to life through her music.
“Brings flair and a bit of magic to everything she creates” – Natalie Nicolas, Composer
